We are pleased to invite your participation at the 42nd Annual Meeting of the Southern Anthropological Society.  The keynote theme for the conference is “Southern Cuisines and Southern Foodways.” The theme reflects an essential element of what Southerners identify as being “Southern,” their food and use of food in hospitality.  The four-fields of anthropology encourage participation inviting multiple perspectives of food, food preparation, procurement, and process.  Of course, we also encourage papers and sessions on any topic relating to research, application, or teaching in anthropology and allied scholarly pursuits. Organized panels are welcome. Volunteered papers will also be incorporated into thematic sessions, with the conference organizers providing a session abstract linking the grouped papers.

Hotel accommodations have been arranged with the Inn at Ole Miss, Triplett Alumni Center, Alumni Drive, University, Mississippi 38677.  Rates are $75 single and $85 double occupancy per night.  For reservations call 662- 234-2331 or go to www.theinnatolemiss.com.  Be sure to mention that you are attending the conference.

Using the general guidelines listed below, please submit any of the following by DECEMBER  1, 2006    JANUARY 15, 2007 organized sessions, individual 20-minute paper presentations, poster presentations, and round-table discussions (include organized panels of three or four discussants). Paper and panel abstract forms will be available on the www.southernanthro.org website.

  1. For individual papers or poster presentations, provide the name and affiliation of the primary presenter and include names and affiliations of all co-authors, and an abstract of no more than 150 words (Note: all authors who attend the meeting must register for the meeting.).
  2. For panel proposals, the name and affiliation of the organizer(s) and provide a title and 150-word abstract for the panel suitable for inclusion in the program.
  3. For panel proposals, in addition, list all names, affiliations, and paper titles as you want them to appear in the program and suggest an order of presentations if you have a preference (otherwise presenters will be arranged alphabetically) NOTE: Individual authors on organized panels may submit separate paper abstracts and registration materials..
  4. Plan for 20 minute paper presentations + 10 minutes discussion time in panel time blocks of 90-minutes.  In general, papers will be listed in the program with set start times, holding all discussion time to the end of the session.  If organizers want discussion time after each paper, please request that arrangement.  Variations from the 90 minute panel time blocks may result in organized sessions being placed in late afternoon panel assignments.  Also, each discussant will be allotted 20 minutes of reaction time + 10 minutes of response from presenters (i.e., the same amount of time as regular presenters); if you arrange for formal discussants, they will be scheduled in the same way as presenters.
  5. For each individual to be listed in the program, provide mail and email addresses, and telephone numbers.
  6. Please coordinate with us by email on all submissions.  Email attachments will work best when saved in a RICH TEXT FORMAT.  Your cover information should indicate the word processing system and version of any attached material.
  7. We will need a statement of any audio-visual needs.  We should be able to accommodate most requests, as long as you ask early.  Requests for AV support made at the meeting will be subject to availability at that time.
  8. A check made payable to Southern Anthropological Society to cover conference registration fees, dues, and any special subscription offers  for each presenter should be sent to:
