Historic Staunton is a charming small town located in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley. Staunton has been recognized as one of "America's Dozen Distinctive Destinations" by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. It has five National Historic Districts and unique attractions such as Shenandoah Shakespeare's Blackfriars Playhouse, Frontier Culture Museum, Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library, artists' studios, glassblowing demonstrations at Sunspots Studios. Mary Baldwin College is a private liberal arts college for women founded in 1842. It is diverse in both its programs and its demographics; approximately one-third of the student body is African-American and approximately 30 states and several foreign countries are represented each year. The college also offers special graduate programs in teaching and in Shakespeare and Renaissance Literature in Performance. It is located in Staunton, Virginia, a friendly, safe, and picturesque city in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, approximate two and a half hours by car from Washington, D.C. One can stroll the entire downtown and campus area easily, and in March, the weather is mild (but bring an umbrella, just in case!).
