SAS for Students
SAS holds an annual student paper competition in conjunction with the Society's meeting. A cash prize of $200.00 and a selection of books is awarded to one graduate and one undergraduate paper author. In addition, the winning students' papers will be published and archived here on the SAS website.
New Student Prize Announced!
Beginning in 2007, Valdosta State University will award a $500 scholarship to its Kekchi Maya Cultural Field School in southern Belize to the winner of the SAS undergraduate paper competition.
The four-week field school takes place in June every year, and in addition to formal course work, students design and conduct their own research with the help of the instructors.
Two courses are offered: Ethnographic Writing and The Anthropology of Developing Nations. Staff include a cultural anthropologist and an archaeologist--we normally visit several archaeological sites including Tikal in Guatemala.
The program consists of daily Kekchi language lessons and participant observation Monday through Friday in the small village of Blue Creek, and weekend excursions to the Cayes and the Rainforest.

This award is a scholarship that can only be applied toward the cost of the field school. Awardees will participate in the field school in the same year as the SAS paper competition.
